For the last 10
years or so, i have been able to use mu OFA 7800, but
I guess in the ES line things are different. Any suggestions
what device code to try first.

You mean setup code in the URC-7800? Or what do you mean?

That web page says the two receiver code sets use Sony device numbers 16 and 48. Sony device 16 is in OneForAll setup code Tuner/0158, which is in your URC-7800 and I assume you already tried it and it didn't work.

There is no OneForAll setup code giving the Sony device 48 version of that. Some of the setup codes for more complicated Sony Combos can produce those device 48 signals in newer OneForAll remotes. But without a JP1 cable, you URC-7800 can't generate those device 48 signals.

I have been to hi-fi many
times trying to decipher his page. I have seen a suggestion
to use device 151 on this site,

I have no guess what you mean by "device 151". That doesn't make sense either as a Sony device number or as an OFA setup code number.
