I've place the receiver in as shadowed a location as possible and had good results with the exception of range, pending brightness of the sun, range has been between 8' and about 30' using one of the Xantech receivers. The way I see it is getting within a couple of meters from the receiver is better than going all the way back to the gear.
Although the Xantech waterproof keypad sounds smarter. (unfortunately alot more expensive too)
