If you want to pass inspection, you must use UL approved sheathed cable. Home depot has 100' rolls of 16 ga for about $90 I recall. I'd go with 14 or 12 if you can find it. DO NOT RUN IT ADJACENT TO ELECTRICAL WIRING. Don't be lazy, drill new holes....unless you like a low interference hum coming through your speakers. Also try to keep speaker pairs running together (makes future changes or problem solving easier) and minimalize run lengths. Avoid areas where transformers are used (fluorescent and low voltage lighting). You can run your cat5 for your controllers with your speaker wire until you get to your wall box location. Good luck!
