Oh yeah -- other than that, the diode approach is definitely the way to go.

Be aware that there is usually a 0.7 volt drop across a diode, so the voltage going to the LEDs will lower, which will lower the current and thus lower the amount of IR coming out of the LED. That effect should be more troublesome if you use double LEDs, such as the Xantech. I recommend against using the doubles, though, because you ALWAYS end up having a big hassle when one of the two units needs to be moved for service or the occasional component rearrangement. I'm also a control freak, and I like to be able to disconnect one LED at a time if needed for troubleshooting. Or maybe it's ONLY that I'm a control freak.
