I created an IR blaster by modifing a Xantech 789-44 connecting block. I use a standard table-top IR receiver connected to this block. Open the block up (drill out the 4 rivets) and you will see 4 resistors inside (one for each emitter output). Replace each 470 ohm resistor with a 100 ohm resister and the output port will now be a "high-power" output. I have a standard emitter connected to one of these modified ports and it reliably controls all my components from across the room.
