I wish I had a good direct answer for this.
Mitsubishi used to make what they called a "pen" remote that was round, big enough to hold a couple of AA cells, and had buttons for power, volume up and down, and channel up and down. That sort of thing might exist for other brands.
Now all I can think of is to get the cheapest or smallest fully programmable remote, i.e. the cheapest "Pronto" type remote you can find, and program it with ONLY the few commands you want. Or just program the hard buttons!
Also, you could program a Pronto with only, say, four huge buttons on its touchscreen. The screen on a Pronto is not too bright, but buttons an inch and a half (or so) square) could make up for the lack or brightness. This would be expensive, but could solve your problem.
