One thing to look at is the pin layout in the RMC manual. They show pin 8 in the wrong position.
As far as the Pioneer 2, and 3 are TX$ and RX$, pin 5 being ground. Not exactly sure if 2 and 3 are reversed in this case. So you have a 50% chance of being correct the first time.
