This is the perfect example of what we should all do: refine and refine our questions, including all the information at our disposal. Note how he started out with a question that could easily draw a huge slew of questions from us, then he thought some more about it and realized some details that should have been there, then...when he had the question completely pinned down in all its detail, he had the answer.
And yes, o hydraulic gnome, it is the only option I know of. Niles might have one, though. You could rectify the 12 volts, then feed that to an LED stuck on the end of a Niles light sensor, all neatly wrapped up in a ball of electical tape. Done that one.
