You're right - my bad :0
By tone control, I assumed you ment bass and treble (and not Test Tone).
To adjust bass and treble on my Denon, I first cycle to it with the "Status" command 0160-217. Then, once I get to BASS or TREBLE I use the "Cursor UP/DOWN" commands 0004-228/235.
I've got an AVR 3300, but I assume the commands are the same.
