I 'guess' the weird font was caused by my using
<pre> and </pre>

You'll also notice that the <pre> statement is making your original post be really wide, which is causing this thread to display improperly. So I would recommend that you edit your original post and remove the <pre> and </pre> tags. (Btw, I had to use &lt and &gt in this message in order to get <pre> and </pre> to display as text, rather than acting as HTML, which they did in your 2nd post.

I get 4 flashes.

Then the remote has been reset. Each device button will be returned to it's native state and will be programmed with the default setup codes that John listed. All keymoves, macros and learned signals will be deleted.

I believe it is not resetting
because the device keys cannot be reassinged.
i.e. I cannot swap a vcr device to a receiver.

One is not related to the other. I suspect the problem is user error. The correct sequence to convert the VCR button into being a receiver button is this...

1) Hold SETUP, 2 flashes
2) Type 992, 2 flashes
3) Tap RCVR
4) Tap VCR, 2 flashes

The VCR button is now a receiver button and is ready for you to program it with a setup code.

The original receiver codes stay with the receiver
button. I determine that by observing that the
receiver still respnds to receiver commands, which
by then should have been wiped out.

Is that a valid assumption on my part?

You keep using the term "swap" to describe the 992 "mode map" process and I think that reveals where you might be confused. If you use the 992 code sequence that I just described, all it does it convert the VCR button into a RCVR button. It has no effect on the RCVR button itself, which will still hold whatever code was last programmed to it. It won't become a VCR button as part of some "swap" arrangement. If you actually wanted the RCVR button to become a VCR button, you would reverse steps 3 and 4 in the sequence I described.
Rob.
