Well, considering the money that we're talking about for a JP1 cable is just $14 and it will make your remote infinitely more useful, I would say go for it.
As for your phone troubles, are you using a modern digital phone by any chance? If so, these won't work. Also, it's quite possible that the modem inside has become disconnected as the wires connecting it are very thin.
