For non-lcd remotes like the 1994 and 8810 already cited:
1. Put remote in the MODE you want to test (ie. cable)
2. press "P"/set/setup
3. press 1st 2 digits of test efc
4. press (and hold) last digit making sure remote is aimed at device being controlled.
