A couple of codes that worked with the RCA
remote were 140 and 191.

That told me less than I expected. In the RCA list, 140 is just listed for Hitachi and 191 is listed for Emerson, Orion and Sansui.

In an OFA list, the only setup codes in common among Emerson, Orion and Sansui are setup codes for Philips RC5 protocol, device 0.

If that is it then lots of other setup codes should also partially work. But if that were it, I'd expect the digits to work perfectly. I don't get the instant change after single digit symptom.

I'm not familair with "JP1".

It is a cable and associated free software for programming some OneForAll remotes (and rare models of a few other brands that are made by the manufacturer of OneForAll). With that you can program the remote to generate whatever signals you want, as long as you can somehow determine what signals you want.

It sounds like the set of signals is a rearrangement of some common set (probably RC5:0, but even if not RC5:0, something common) so it shouldn't be hard with an OFA remote to find a partially working setup code.

Even without a JP1 cable, most OFA remotes allow "KeyMoves" that allow you to rearrange buttons and add new ones (by advanced codes) within a code set (such as RC5:0).

So it is very likely you could get this working right with a OneForAll remote and end up with a good universal remote at less than the cost (but more effort) than buying a third party replacement for the exact original remote.

If you're not going to try JP1 programming the models I recommend are the same as Edmund just recommended.

If you are going to try JP1, the best choice is to get the 8910 and JP1 cable together from Rob. See his page at:
