Well, here is a strange one...problem solved.
I received the Prism and it was dead. Not even a charge light. I charged it overnight, and it came on. Soon all was well, then it took a dump and cleared the memory. After this happened a couple of times, I thought to myself, the problem with my old Prism was the broken case and something internal about connections...maybe I should switch mother boards.
Long story no longer: I switched mother boards between the two Prisms, and BOTH now work properly. I guess the connections were flaky, and exercising them exorcised the problems!
