If you want to open up your PPC and risk voiding your warranty, shorting the switch contacts in the headset jack will give you both internal sound and output via the jack.
Whether the speaker load will cause problems for the TR dongle, I don't know.
You may find the rat-a-tat-tat sound of the codes more annoying than it is worth. The ~18kHz bursts sent to the dongle may also be annoying and may even do damage to the speaker. The unmodulated audio signals sent to the speaker might damage the TR dongle or even the PPC.
Bottom line, if both are important, buy a PPC that has eitheradequate internal IR or can use one of the CCF extenders.
