I have on order a ipaq 5455. I did not order the
extender. do i need it? i do not need it with
my toshiba e335.

On ALL iPaqs you will find the IrDA port to be far too weak for decent remote control use. I get about 10-15 feet with my 5555. This obviously does not take into account the special CIR port that is in addition to the standard IrDA port that is on the iPaq 22xx, 54xx, 39xx and others.

The only practical way of doing remote control on most iPaq is using the audio transmitter with Total Remote.

It is basically optional on the e3xx Toshibas. Your IrDa is quite powerful, like 20-30 feet. Your PDA does support the audio trnsmitter, but not every IR device likes it so try it out and see if it works for you.
