After trying out Remote Control II, Total Remote,
and NoviiRemote on my Axim x50v, I've come to
the conclusion that this stuff just doesn't work
or isn't worth it. Either the software is just
plain bad, the IR in the PDA isn't good enough,
the software can't make use of the hard keys,
etc. One of the above was so slow between clicks,
it was useless. Another one, I couldn't tell if
it was the software or the PDA. Sometimes it would
work, sometimes not. Didn't matter if I was 1'
away or 7' away.
So what about going a different route? Like remote
control type software on the PDA that talks to
a server (HTPC) that's connected to a real IR
blaster. Anything like this exist?
I was thinking of getting an IR blaster for the
PC just to help with finding codes. Any good IR
blasters come with software for accomplishing
this?

I don't know if it works with the Axim, but I have been using TV Reomte Controller 5 from pdawin.com for a couple of years and am very happy with it. It supports a primitive CF-based IR blaster from Laser Business Systems (
[Link: laser.com]) which solved my range problems.
The biggest advantage is that it is a full featured Pronto emulator, capable of using CCF files for layouts and not just their IR codes.
