Some high end pre/pros (eg. Lexicon, Theta, Meridian, Proceed, Parasound, etc.) have RS-232 connectors for the purpose of software updates via PC and 2-way communication of unit status and issuance of commands. My Theta pre/pro has an RS232 interface. An example of where it is highly useful is that using the standard IR remote (or front panel buttons) you have to navigate through menus up to 4 layers deep to issue some commands. The Theta RS232 protocol has provisions to issue every command in the unit directly. It's very powerful, and to date only the $2K+ system controllers have been able to take advantage of it. I would think the TheaterTouch would be an appealing product, at its price point, to anyone who owns RS232 capable gear. I know I'm thinking strongly about getting one! Note that the TheaterTouch is capable of 1-way (send) RS232 operation only. You still have to pay the big bucks for a system controller with 2-way RS232 capability.
