I did the antenna mod on my IRF-6's and it is worthwhile- you can do a search to find it
its pretty simple: it involves installing a bulkhead BNC connector by drilling a hole in the case of the IRF-6, and cutting the antenna coax so just a short jumper connects between the circuit board and the connector
this allows you to use a better grade of coax in a custom length for your antenna
this did make a significant improvement to my system
