To have TheaterTouch software recognize hex data, just put a \x before every hex data pair. For your example, \xA5\x01\x00\x01 . . .
Unfortunately, the software "prefers" ASCII, then decimal. After you enter the hex string, your RS-232 command string will be displayed as a mixture of ASCII characters (if a hex pair maps to an ASCII character), and decimal numbers (displayed as \dnnn). It makes it very hard to recognize the string when you come back to it a few days later.
