I have found that the antenna allows me to change channels in adjacent room as well as from the level below the TV room. Quite an improvement in my case.
The batteries are a series of four 1.2V. Toshiba F3's. I too cannot find them immediately available, but am looking at some alternative. Will let you know when I have tried out some alternatives that are viable.
