I have experienced this as well,
easiest solution is to always change the file name when saving, so I end up with a folder full of versions 1.1, 1.2, 1.3 etc.
Seems to be a problem overwriting a file once it exceeds a certain size, bad luck on losing your work, I know it's very frustrating
