...Pronto but
I didn't like it for two reasons: I found I really liked
a hand-held much more than a touchscreen as i use the
butons by feel a lot instead of looking directly at the
remote

There are lots of these in the field of every model that I programmed but once I programmed one for myself I learned that I like buttons too. I don't want to have to look at the remote, that is, look away from the TV, to do everything except volume, and I don't channel surf.
and secondly, it was IR only and some of my equipment
didn't have discrete on/off/input codes and the macros
therfore didn't always work.

With a few exceptions, there are workarounds for this, and I've found most of them on or through remotecentral. Of all of those remotes I've programmed, I think three have leftover commands with no workarounds. If your Pronto couldn't do this, it was a lack on the part of your programmer, or perhaps it was any programmer up to advanced genius level who hadn't heard of this site!
That's why I am looking for something like the RTI. I
also would like to hopefully check out these remotes in
hand, so to speak.

I think member SOUND.SD is in SD, that is, San Diego. You shold look him up.
A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.
