X-10 can be reliable but you have to understand the system and technology. Basically, for it to run correctly you may need filters, bridges, boosters, etc. If you are having trouble with certain outlets than you probably need a filter or a bridge. Devices that cause interference on the same circuit would require a filter on the outlet of various offending devices. I would try to isolate the offending device, DVD players, cable, SAT boxes are notorius. If the outlet you are plugging it in to doesn't have any other devices on that circuit and it doesn't work than you probably need a bridge. Homes >2500 sq. feet (include garage and basements in sq. ft) often need boosters. Also, how close your home is to a transformer is another reason you may need a booster. I would give www.smarthome.com a call, they are pretty familiar with X-10 stuff.
