Try this. Learn all the commands to the LCD and name them whatever you want. Instead of using shortcuts, click on the "slow" LCD button, for instance, then press CTRL-C to copy, then click on the stop button and press CTRL-V to paste the command to the stop button. By copying and pasting the commands they will retain the names you gave them when they are pasted to the hard buttons. (i.e. your stop button is now named slow)

Edit:
PS Once the commands are copied to the hard buttons, delete them from the LCD if you don't need them there.

The other option (If you're geek enough to handle this) is to use a hex editor, open the MXF file and rename them there, but if you are going to make them longer or shorter you need to modify another bit before the name to tell it the name length. To rename stop to slow is easy since they are both 4 characters but make sure you do it on the right page.

Oh yeah, make a backup before you attempt this, even us who have been doing this for years still mess them up once in a while.
