I have always had trouble doing USB passthrough with VMWare. Not that it is impossible I just have never gotten it to work quite like I need it to. If you are a VMWare guru, give it a shot and let us know how it works.
I do have a friend who programmed his mx-850 on a mac with bootcamp.
