OK, my previous post can be disregarded as I have fixed
the problem. For anyone out there that is having this
same problem, the way that I finally got the programming
code that I entered to be stored on the remote was to
follow these steps:

1. Press the SELECT+MUTE buttons for 3 seconds until
the TV button lit up. (Muchas gracias to member GOKU!)

2. Enter the 3 digit programming code (in my case it
was 211)

3. Press and hold the SELECT+MUTE button for an additional
20 seconds. This may seem obvious in retrospect since
it's the way to initiate the programming module, but hey,
what can you do?

The ABOVE instructions FINALLY helped me get through the WHOLE process. One caveat, though: In step 3, MY remote only only accept the code that was entered by pressing ONLY the SELECT button. SELECT + MUTE for the final step did not work on my remote with this serial number.
