I've had both - first the Sony, now the Panny. I returned the Sony after having a bunch of issues playing particular discs, despite about 3 firmware updates in about 2 weeks of ownership. And, it's slower than molasses. The Panny has no problems with any of my discs and loads MUCH faster. Panny = better machine at this point, IMHO.
