Do you mean which widescreen mode - 4:3, 16x9 anamorphic or 16x9 zoom?
Ever since my first DVD player in 1998 it's done that on any type of video output, although the TV has to accept the signal. On a Sony XBR 32" 4:3 it would accept the anamorphic tag, while on my current 60" RPTV it will automatically process 4:3 fullscreen, anamorphic and non-anamorphic widescreen zoom, assuming the DVD is correctly encoded with those tags (many aren't).
