I have heard them too, but I never saw one that is dim. Actually I have used the backlight as flashlight, when I was too lazy to open the light. Does not make the best flashlight, but definitely the screen is visible in total darkness. If you mean the contrast, then it is not a problem of dimness, but that on some of the screens it is hard to differentiate between the 4 shades of gray. But this is the Market place, there is better places to post your questions.
Also, if the Pronto had such a bad reputation, why would there be so many users, three other companies decided to rebrand it (Marantz, Yamaha, Onkyo) and it has been going strong for more then three years
