Unless you have a DVD player that can convert PAL to play on your NTSC TV, don't buy a PAL version.
DVD-R and DVD+R should both work. But you'd have to do trial and error to see if they will work for you. You can try looking up your model player at places like videohelp.com to see if others have posted experiences with various media.
