Just because your components have a place on a shelf doesn't mean they have to stay there. I made a tall component shelf with casters (for pulling out to access the back) and space for each of my components (with room for growth) and some media storage. I made it to match the details of my TV and it's stand, and they look very nice together. Having it near the TV lets me use high quality short (less expensive) A/V cables. Speaker wires are shorter to all but the rear, which I use wireless (RF) speakers for. Very neat.

I'll bet you can find something else to go on the shelves. Your components will be line-of-site for your remote control(s). If you're anywhere near Iowa I could make you a component rack.
