When you said that the remote is doing the 4 beep trick. I thought that you ment it beeps 4 times, screen comes on for a second, then it repeats itself over and over.

But since your's is not repeating itself. Leave the batteries out for 8 hours or so. Then come back to it. Attach the remote to the computer. Do the update firmware stuff, and when asked to reset the remote, put the batteries in.
