I've done some additional research and it sounds like the CX985V has a known problem with playing Star Trek TNG DVDs. (probably some others too, but all my other players play them fine)

If anyone owns a set of TNG DVDs and has played them on the CX777ES, please let me know if you've seen what I've described on that player. I'm considering getting this more expensive model.
