If you go with an HD player, I would go with the PS3. It is an incredible machine. Also HD DVD is pretty much dead. You are right that BD did not have a great start, but it started much latter (Jul vs April). Had some hics (some bad mastering meaning some movies needed to be re done, players from other makers took longer to come to market, bug in the Samsung that took 3 months to get fixed...) and still it over took HD DVD in all categories before the end of the year.
