I've had both a Cyberhome DVD player with HDMI-out that would upconvert (piece of cr@p), and now am using a Samsung DVD-R with HDMI-out that upconverts (very well). The Cyberhome was $80ish at Walmart a few years back, and the Samsung I bought recently at BestBuy for $179. It's on sale right now for $162ish.
Daniel is right, but DVDs sure do look better upscaled on a HDTV monitor than they ever did on an old-fashioned TV.
I'll buy a HD/BluRay player when they are $229. I might have bought a $499 HD DVD player recently until I realized NO PLACE in my town rents HD DVDs yet.
