The next thing to check is whether the memory would clear in a shorter amount of time if, say, a book were pressing on several hard buttons for a day or two. Even though most of the circuitry is CMOS, so takes microamperes or picoamperes, is therefore of really high impedance so takes a LONG time to discharge, this might speed it up.
