Did the "telenet" (hyperterminal) procedure appear to work as described in the FAQ?
When you're trying to calibrate, are you using something with a point, or your finger? A finger is not precise enough and will often cause calibration to fail.
The only other thought I can come up with is disconecting the battery for a 24 hour period, this sometimes results in a return to normal operation.
