I have done some more reading and some experimenting.

I reset the factory system off macro on the av3000 and then slowed the interval way down to 900ms. Then i used my palm pilot with a remote control program to capture the discret off command from that macro for the AMP only. I confirmed that the captured command worked on the palm pilot, ie. would turn the AMP off but not on. Then i tried to teach that comand back the AV3000 so i could include it in my own system off macro. But the AV3000 would not learn that AMP off command. It beeped like it learned and when i press that button it beeps but the amp stays on.

Any ideas?

Update:
I found the problem with the Palm Pilot. Apperently it was sending something at the begining of the signal that the AV3000 did not like. I wasn't paying attention it wasn't learning the command it was flashing the NG and aborting the learn. So i found that if i press the button on the palm with the transmiter above the reciver on the AV3000 (out of range) and then quickly move the palm down into range i can avoid the bad part of the signal and the AV3000 will take the command. So using this i was able to learn a button to be power off only. I then included this in my custom power off macro and now everything works great. I can find the name of this palm program if anyone else is interested.

But this has me thinking. Why has no one wrote a program for a PC that will allow you output arbitrary signals from the IR port on your computer? And also read in arbitrary IR data. Kind of the ultimate IR hacking utility. Then you could learn stuff from your remotes, craft custom commands and micro-macros, etc...

I wish i had the programing skills to do this.
