I like to use hardware based speed tests that some routers provide. Browser based speed tests depend somewhat on the executing platform. For example, my dated, wired PC realizes much slower speed than my iPad while running the ISP's speed test. And, it's not subtle -- it's about 2:1 on gigabit service.

In my experience Speedof.me tends to show the slowest connection.
