The lens has a very short focal point and not much light leaks out from under the head assembly while covered by a disc. If you are servicing a unit with an empty tray, you may be able to see some light as the player attempts to focus on a disc. You'll likely be quite far from the focal point, but I don't recommend viewing the beam on axis. There is no danger that you'll burn a track on the ceiling.
