And if it was broadcast on DirecTV, even if on the local channels, there is a decent chance someone else has posted it online. I am assuming school sports? Try asking the school. I know even in the mid 90s, I was recording our school's soccer and football games for AV class with a dope VHS shoulder killer. Shoot, even call the broadcaster, especially if its a locally operated channel. They might be more than happy to share their archives. Good luck with any other science project.
