The nomenclature depends on a person's viewpoint.
In my case, i consider that the firmware is the flash memory OS that is loaded onto the remote. The fact that this is non-volatile memory, to me, correlates to firmware Whereas when I upload a config file, that is considered a software update.
If you have 7.3.3 that is the firmware version. The IR engine underneath is part of the 7.3.3 total release and no-one on this site that I can recall ever referred to 4.0.20.
