Well the comment was "we don't want to spend thousands, we are looking for something in the hundreds...."

Which from the way it was said, seemed to me like code for "whilst £999 is technically less than a thousand, what we really mean is £200-£300"

I really just need to hit them with some options and see what they are comfortable with!
