As an outsider, the US Electoral College system does appear unduly complex, but the First Past the Post system, as used over here, also has its fair share of detractors. Rarely does an election go by without someone (usually from one of the minor parties) whinging and whining about Proportional Representation; a system which, I believe, serves to give minor parties greater influence than their share of the popular vote allows.
EU Parliamentary elections use a form of PR, but it's all a sham as MEP's have little power to alter or amend what's placed before them. And they certainly can't propose anything - that power lies with the unelected commissioners. In effect, therefore, the EU is something of a dictatorship; with the parliament being window dressing to provide the appearance of democracy. We are well rid of it.
