As far as I understand it, pneumonia can sometimes scar the lungs. Leaving behind scar tissue. That does NOT heal. It will always be there from then forward and cause decreased lung function. This current virus is doing this to many people's lungs.
There was a news article a few weeks ago, how medical professionals in Japan were monitoring & testing those that had recovered. They were finding many with scar tissue and decreased lung function, some with as much as 20-30%.
