In general, you'll get better feedback at the Custom Installers forum than here, even if only because there are probably more eyes looking at the posts over there.

I assume you aren't using an A/V receiver, just the TV and DirecTV receiver. If that's not the case, come back here and fully describe what you have.

If you're just using a TV and a DirecTV receiver:

Most remotes that can control more than one device cannot control ALL functions on ALL devices. Rethink your remotes -- program the DirecTV device to turn the TV on and off. You can also set it to change TV inputs, if that's an issue.

Then you'll have a DirecTV remote that will give you the 30 second jump and quick replay and will give you the TV control required for watching DirecTV. Problem solved, unless you didn't completely explain the problem.

My living room setup is similar to this, with the addition of an A/V receiver. Since the DirecTV codes for Yamaha receivers do not include a POWER ON command, I actually leave the receiver on all the time. It works perfectly.
