Due to the lack of voice control, I'm going to assume it's actually a traditional IR remote, and this isn't really a huge deal since anyone could take any aftermarket IR remote with a better layout and "teach" its commands into the ATV.
It's a nice remote design, and would be quite useful for a lot of devices if it just had a couple more buttons.
