My brother-in-law bought a new 2019 Mazda CX5. The microphone is really lousy to the point that sometimes you can hardly hear him on a call.

I know very little about car electronics, but want to give him some guidance. Should he just talk to his dealer about replacing the existing mic with an aftermarket unit?

I don't know what I don't know on this topic, so would appreciate any input.

I would do these things.

#1. Try a different phone with the brother in laws new mazda to make sure the mic is crappy with all phones/networks.

#2. Try brother in laws phone with a floor model mazda cx5.

These steps will tell you if the problem is with just your brother in laws mic or all mazda cx5 mics. If all of them suck go with an after market mic. If its just his mic get it replaced under warranty.
