I believe the motor (magnetic side) is installed on the side that is ported to topside for ventilation. If it were installed on the other side, it wouldn’t be able to cool off as that side is (suppose to be) completely sealed off. Besides, it wouldn’t matter as the speaker is thrusted in both directions. Remember you’re dealing with audio which is AC to a speaker.
But I think these problem subs were built on a Friday and the employees wanted to go home. 🙂

ive seen more bandpass boxes with the drivers motor structure in the sealed portion than in the ported version. im not sure about your ventilation theory. not to mention it stays pretty cool a foot down, at least in most soil.
